Home health care service provided Colt with a nurse to give both professional care and practical help at the beginning and end of each day. In her late fifties, Joan Hilbert arrived at day break, per Colt’s request. She pressed his suit and chatted amicably about her husband, children and grandchildren while he shaved, then facilitated his bathing and dressing. Colt turned down her offer to cook his breakfast, and asked her for a lift to the church instead.
The back pew extended out farther than the rest. The open space in front of it accommodated Colt’s injured leg. As a youth he had at tended worship faithfully. But after his split with Paula, Colt found little solace in the midst of those enjoying a peace that eluded him. His work at the magazine became a welcome distraction from the wintry landscape within. So he gave it his full attention, including week ends. Now, after years of neglect, being in Sun day morning worship was about as comfortable as scrubbing his teeth with someone else’s toothbrush.
But Joy had invited him and he couldn’t bring himself to disappoint her. Hearing voices, Colt turned to see Joy crossing the church vestibule. His paternal glow overlapped his conflicting emotions concerning Paula who trekked after her, a cloud in pink. Colt straightened his tie, spread one arm over the back of the pew and beckoned to them. Joy’s face lit up.
“Look, Mom. Dad’s here!”
Colt read Joy’s lips as she pointed him out to Paula. Clearly she hadn’t been expecting him. She ducked her head, taking cover beneath a wide-brimmed hat. Embellished with netting and an old-fashioned cabbage rose, the hat was familiar and fetching. Her hair curled beneath the brim, and spilled to her shoulders in rich radiant waves.
Joy’s bejeweled fingers fluttered hello as she entered the pew from the other end, and plunked down beside him.
“Hi, Dad!”
“Hi, yourself,” he answered her bid for a smile, and braced himself for Paula.
“Oops. Forgot something.” Joy popped up again.
Paula bit back a protest, pulled in high-heeled sandals that left her toes exposed and let Joy pass. Her nails were tipped in glossy pink enamel. The same feminine hue adorned her fingertips.
“Good morning. I hope I’m not intruding,” ventured Colt. “Joy invited me.”
“I guessed as much,” said Paula. “How are you feeling?”
“Better.”
“Then Joy didn’t wear you out last night?”
“No, not at all.”
“Don’t let her push you beyond your limits. Just tell her when you need to rest.”
Finding her sudden consideration as suspect as it was surprising, Colt was relieved when her gaze shifted away from him to the cross upon the dais. Her lashes came down, then swept apart as she looked past those stark wooden beams to a stained-glass window depicting the Shepherd with a lamb in his arms.
Their own intrepid lamb returned waving a bulletin. She nudged Paula to the middle, and continued to crowd her closer to Colt as more people filed in. Colt and Paula soon sat shoulder to shoulder. Paula fanned herself with
